In July, SCOPE members Mayra Rodriguez and Elin Meek participated in the Royal Society Summer Science Exposition, taking place at the home of the Royal Society in central London. They volunteered in the stand “Deep Heat: How a warming ocean is changing life on Earth”, which focused on the UK ocean observing capabilities (Atlantis project) and the ways UK marine science is working to monitor and mitigate climate change derived effects; including a focus on ocean circulation, carbon cycles and plankton (topics very relevant to SCOPE).
The stand was a collaborative effort between Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the National Oceanographic Centre, the Marine Biological Association and the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences. Furthermore, Elin Meek wore a coccolithophore outfit, which was the result of a fruitful collaboration between Plymouth Marine Laboratory and Arts University Plymouth.
The Summer Science exposition is a prestigious Royal Society’s flagship public engagement event attracting around 10,000 visitors and was a great opportunity for members of SCOPE to promote their work and engage new audiences.
Have you ever seen a #Coccolithophore outfit before? Designed by talented students at @artsuniplym, excited to deliver a costume with a significant educational message. See for yourself at @RoyalSociety's free #SummerScience Exhibition, we're here all week! #RoyalSocietyAtlantis pic.twitter.com/ePi9utAcGp
