Recently, Dr. Gemma Kulk, Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath and Bror Jönsson travelled to Split, Croatia, to attend a workshop on phytoplankton primary production. The workshop was organised by the Photoclim project and brought together researchers from Croatia, UK and USA to discuss the latest techniques and methodologies for quantifying primary production in aquatic ecosystems.
Primary production refers to the synthesis of organic compounds from carbon dioxide, mainly through photosynthesis. Measuring primary production is crucial for understanding the flow of carbon through the marine ecosystem, as well as assessing the overall health and productivity of aquatic environments.
During the 3-day workshop in Split, the participants engaged in a mix of lectures, discussions and hands-on demonstrations. Some of the key topics covered included:
- Principles and methods of 14C and O2 incubation techniques for measuring phytoplankton primary production
- Challenges and best practices for in situ measurements of primary production
- Integration of remote sensing data with in situ observations to scale up primary production estimates
- The role of primary production in global biogeochemical cycles and climate change
Gemma, Shubha and Bror, found the workshop fruitful to network with experts in the field and gain insights into the latest research and methodological advancements.
